André Kertész (geboren als Andor Kertész) was een in Hongarije geboren fotograaf die bekend stond om zijn baanbrekende bijdragen aan de fotografische compositie en het foto-essay. Hij werd in 1894 geboren in Budapest en beoefende fotografie als autodidact, ondanks de druk van zijn familie om zich te bezighouden met de effectenhandel. Zijn carrière wordt traditioneel onderverdeeld in vier periodes: de Hongaarse periode (begin jaren 1920), de Franse periode (midden jaren 1920 tot eind jaren 1930), de Amerikaanse periode (eind jaren 1930 tot begin jaren 1960) en de Internationale periode (na de jaren 1960). Kertész was een pionier in het gebruik van onorthodoxe camerastandpunten, vervormingsspiegels en het vastleggen van het dagelijks leven met een intieme, nostalgische toon. Hij woonde tijdens de tussenoorlogse jaren in Parijs, waar hij kritisch succes behaalde en verbonden raakte met de Dada-beweging. In 1936 emigreerde hij naar de Verenigde Staten en werd uiteindelijk genaturaliseerd burger. Gedurende zijn lange carrière stond hij bekend om zijn toewijding aan 'schrijven met licht' en het vastleggen van zowel grote landschappen als stille, alledaagse momenten.[5]
