Duane Michals (1932–2026) was een pionierende Amerikaanse fotograaf die bekend stond om het introduceren van narratieve sequenties, meervoudige belichtingen en handgeschreven tekst in de fine art fotografie. Na zijn diensttijd bij het US Army verhuisde hij in het midden van de jaren 50 naar New York City, waar hij zijn carrière begon met een focus op geregisseerde fotografische drama's die innerlijke werelden, dromen en metafysische vragen verkenden in plaats van de letterlijke realiteit. Zijn werk put vaak uit surrealistische invloeden en bevat poëtische of scherpe bijschriften die interageren met zijn beelden om complexe, soms tegenstrijdige narratieven te creëren. De praktijk van Michals breidde zich over decennia uit naar schilderkunst, collage, beeldhouwkunst en film.
