Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein (1930–2019) was een vooraanstaande Amerikaanse socioloog, economisch historicus en wereld-systeemanalist. Hij wordt vooral erkend voor de ontwikkeling van de 'world-systems theory', een macrohistorische benadering die de sociaaleconomische dynamiek van mondiale afhankelijkheid en onderlinge afhankelijkheid onderzoekt, in het bijzonder de dynamiek van het mondiale kapitalisme en de rol van rijke naties bij het manipuleren van zwakkere landen. Hij studeerde aan Columbia University, waar hij in 1959 zijn Ph.D. behaalde, en werd in 2000 Senior Research Scholar aan Yale University. Zijn werk heeft de sociale en politieke filosofie diepgaand gevormd door een kader te bieden voor het begrijpen van mondiale ongelijkheid, anti-koloniale bewegingen en de historische ontwikkeling van de Europese wereldeconomie. Zijn boek 'Europa', gepubliceerd in 2000, dient als tekstueel onderdeel van een fotografisch werk dat de Europese geschiedenis documenteert.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10]
