Janet Malcolm (1934–2021) was een vooraanstaande Amerikaanse schrijver en vaste journalist bij The New Yorker. Geboren als Jana Klara Wienerová in Praag, vluchtte zij in 1939 uit het door de nazi's bezette Tsjecho-Slowakije en vestigde zich uiteindelijk in de Verenigde Staten. Malcolm stond bekend om haar scherpe analytische stijl en haar vermogen om de complexiteit van menselijk gedrag, psychoanalyse en de kunsten te verkennen. Haar vroege carrière als fotocriticus voor The New Yorker leverde haar eerste boek op, Diana and Nikon: Essays on Photography (1980). Ze is ook bekend van belangrijke non-fictie werken zoals The Journalist and the Murderer en In the Freud Archives.
