Johannes Philippus Backx

Johannes Philippus (Jan) Backx was a Dutch port baron and director of Thomsen's Havenbedrijf in Rotterdam. Born in Watergraafsmeer, he studied law and economics in Leiden before joining his father's company in 1929. He became the director of Thomsen's Havenbedrijf in 1935, where he significantly expanded the workforce and oversaw social welfare initiatives for port workers, including housing, pensions, and education. Backx was a prominent figure in Rotterdam's reconstruction after World War II, serving on various boards and committees dedicated to urban development and cultural life. He held political positions in the municipal council of Rotterdam and was known for his commitment to improving the social status of industrial laborers. He received several honors, including the Paul Nijgh-Penning and the Van Oldenbarneveltpenning.[1]
