Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992) was een vooraanstaande Italiaanse kunstenaar en fotograaf die bekend stond om zijn verkenning van de relatie tussen fictie en realiteit. Geboren in Scandiano, begon hij zijn professionele carrière in de jaren 70 onder grote invloed van conceptual art. Zijn werk wordt gekenmerkt door een gortdroge, vaak ironische humor en een antropologische betrokkenheid bij alledaagse landschappen, volkse architectuur en door mensen aangepaste omgevingen in het naoorlogse Italië. Hij werd internationaal geprezen als een van de meest significante fotografen van de 20e eeuw, met name vanwege zijn serie 'Topographie-Iconographie'. Ghirri's fotografie vangt subtiele emotionele tonen door zorgvuldig rijke composities en kleurgebruik. Hij overleed op 49-jarige leeftijd aan een hartaanval in Roncocesi.[1,2,3,5,7]
