Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas is een hedendaagse Zuid-Afrikaanse schilder en kunstenaar woonachtig in Nederland. Ze werd geboren in Cape Town in 1953 en begon haar artistieke praktijk in 1973, waarbij ze thema's als identiteit, ras, seksualiteit en politieke kwesties verkende via figuratieve portretkunst. Haar werk verwijst vaak naar een uitgebreid archief aan bronbeelden, waaronder Polaroids, journalistische foto's en kunsthistorische voorbeelden. Dumas staat bekend om haar losse penseelstreken en nat-in-nat techniek die emotionele vervorming creëert terwijl ze toch opvallende details behoudt.
