Peter Sexford Magubane

fotograaf

Peter Sexford Magubane (1932–2024) was een vooraanstaande Zuid-Afrikaanse fotograaf en anti-apartheidsactivist. Hij begon zijn carrière in het midden van de jaren 50 bij het tijdschrift Drum, waar hij onder leiding van Jürgen Schadeberg werkte. Magubane was een van de eerste zwarte fotografen in Zuid-Afrika die historische momenten van het land vastlegde, waaronder het bloedbad van Sharpeville en de Rivonia-proces van Nelson Mandela. Hij werd meerdere keren gearresteerd vanwege zijn fotografie, die vaak als aanstootgevend voor de apartheidstaat werd beschouwd. In 1976 ontving hij internationale lof voor zijn documentatie van de Soweto-opstand. Magubane werd later in 1990 de persoonlijke fotograaf van Nelson Mandela en bleef werken als fotojournalist en kunstfotograaf tot aan zijn dood.[5,6,7,8]
