Robert Henri

auteur

Robert Henri (1865–1929) was a prominent American painter, teacher, and art critic, most notably known as the founder and leader of the Ashcan School. Born Robert Henry Cozad in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studied in Paris, where he was influenced by the Impressionists but sought to create a more robust, dramatic American realist style. Upon returning to the United States, he became a pivotal figure in New York's art scene, teaching at various institutions and establishing his own studio. His teaching philosophy centered on the concept of 'art spirit'—the interior essence of a subject—which he documented in his writings. Henri's legacy includes his significant role in mentoring many influential artists of the 20th century and his advocacy for urban realism as a legitimate and expressive art form.[1,2,3,4,5]
