William Raymond Manchester

William Raymond Manchester (1922–2004) was een vooraanstaande Amerikaanse auteur, journalist en historicus. Hij diende bij het United States Marine Corps tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waar hij gewond raakte in de Battle of Okinawa. Na de oorlog bouwde hij een onderscheidende carrière op in de journalistiek, onder meer voor The Baltimore Sun, en werd later professor aan Wesleyan University. Manchester staat vooral bekend om zijn uitgebreide biografische werk over belangrijke figuren uit de 20e eeuw, waaronder Winston Churchill (The Last Lion), Douglas MacArthur (American Caesar) en John F. Kennedy (The Death of a President). Zijn schrijfstijl werd vaak gekenmerkt door een persoonlijke narratieve benadering en gedetailleerd historisch onderzoek. In 2001 ontving hij de National Humanities Medal voor zijn bijdragen aan de Amerikaanse literatuur.
