The Eye of the Beholder

John Canaday begins his introduction with this pivotal statement: "This book makes its appearance at a curious moment in the history of interplay between painting and photography." It is a theme that resonates with the reader/viewer as this book is enjoyed and studied. Please see photographs for more information and examples. The book is in fine condition, with black cloth boards and bright gilt lettering on the spine. The binding is tight and the corners are square. There is slight foxing on the top page edges. The dust jacket is not creased nor torn, but has scratches that do not penetrate the glossy surface. The original price is intact. It is clad in an archival clear cover that protects, but that can be removed easily if desired. The 128 unmarked pages on quality paper are loaded with color photographs that make use of the abstract qualities of water, stone, lichen and algae, trees, walls and sidings, posters and signs, asphalt, and rust. Aside from the introduction and photographers' statement of purpose and philosophy (pp. 7-10), this is a book of color plates without captions or comments.
