He helped form the Magnum photo agency, helped enable photographers to maintain rights to their images, and he was an important voice in photography into his nineties. As an artist, he advocated the photographer's quest for 'the decisive moment', a concept he embodied in his 1952 book. The Europeans is a sort of companion to The Decisive Moment, issued three years later, in similar format and size, and again with boards designed by an artist (Miro instead of Matisse). The images are again remarkable and iconic, reproduced beautifully in large format.
The Europeans is a seminal photobook by Henri Cartier-Bresson, published in 1955 as a collaboration between Simon & Schuster (New York) and Editions Verve (Paris). The work features 114 large black-and-white photographs taken across ten European countries during the first half of the 1950s. It captures a continent recovering from the devastation of World War II, showcasing landscapes shadowed by war where people lived among ruins. The book is notable for its distinctive cover design executed by artist Joan Miró and includes an introduction by Cartier-Bresson. A separate printed caption booklet was typically tipped into the volume.
