Candomblé

Published in 1957 by Edições O Cruzeiro, 'Candomblé' is a seminal work by photojournalist José Medeiros. The book originated from a controversial and groundbreaking reportage titled "As noivas dos deuses sanguinários" (The Brides of the Bloodthirsty Gods), first published in the magazine 'O Cruzeiro' in 1951. It features 62 photographs (some sources cite 52 or 60) documenting the secret religious initiation processes of Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion. Medeiros was one of the first photographers to gain access to these sacred rituals, providing a significant documentary record of the faith's practices in Bahia.
