Though Burri's first book was a commercial failure in its time, it has since become a classic of post-war European documentary photography. Intended as a counterpart to Les Americains and similar in design, Les Allemands is considered the definitive portrait of a complex, changing nation struggling shake off the legacy of World War II and redefine itself.
Les Allemands (The Germans) is a seminal photographic work by Swiss photographer René Burri, published in 1963 by Robert Delpire as part of the 'Encyclopédie essentielle' series. The book features 88 black-and-white photographs that provide an objective and poignant portrait of the German people in the post-World War II era. It is noted for its layout and format, which were intended to be a counterpart to Robert Frank's influential 'The Americans'. The publication includes texts selected by Jean Baudrillard and was printed using gravure by Imago, Zurich.
