The Photographic Artifacts of Timothy O'Sullivan

This book provides an in-depth analysis of the career of documentary photographer Timothy O'Sullivan, who famously documented the western United States during geological survey expeditions led by Clarence King and George Wheeler between 1860 and 1870. Author Rick Dingus explores these 'photographic artifacts,' featuring numerous black-and-white illustrations and plates of American landscapes. The work includes a detailed study of O'Sullivan's images, many of which were captured in remote locations like the Colorado River column and the Humboldt Mountains. As part of the Rephotographic Survey Project, Dingus also re-photographed several of these historic sites to provide contemporary context for O'Sullivan's early geological survey pictures.
