Cafe Lehmitz is a seminal photobook by Swedish photographer Anders Petersen that documents the late-1960s nightlife at the Café Lehmitz, a bar located on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany. This 2007 edition, published by Rat Hole in Tokyo, serves as an elegant and edited-down version of the classic work first released in 1978. The book features 88 full bleed black and white photographs capturing the atmosphere of a meeting point for sex workers, transvestites, drunks, pimps, and other regulars. This specific Japanese edition includes text in both English and Japanese, featuring an essay by Mariko Takeuchi translated into English by Reiko Imanishi. The cover design is inspired by a burgundy leatherette cafe menu with Art Deco styling.
