Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman (1918–2006) was een Amerikaanse fotograaf die breed werd erkend als pionier van de environmental portraiture. Geboren in New York City en opgegroeid in Atlantic City en Miami Beach, studeerde hij kunst aan de University of Miami voordat hij in 1938 zijn carrière als fotograaf begon. Hij kreeg belangrijke erkenning in het begin van de jaren 40 nadat hij was 'ontdekt' door Beaumont Newhall en Alfred Stieglitz. Newman staat bekend om zijn vermogen om onderwerpen vast te leggen binnen hun natuurlijke omgeving, waarbij hij een gevoel van plaats creëert dat kenmerkend is voor zijn portretkunst. Naast portretten stond hij ook bekend om zijn abstracte en documentaire fotografie. Hij bekleedde diverse academische functies, waaronder artist in residence bij het Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton, en als adjunct professor aan Cooper Union.[1,2]
