Irving Penn

fotograaf

Irving Penn (1917–2009) was een vooraanstaande Amerikaanse fotograaf die bekend stond om zijn invloedrijke werk in de modefotografie, portretkunst en stillevens. Als student van Alexey Brodovitch begon Penn zijn carrière als grafisch ontwerper voordat hij in de jaren 1940 overstapte naar fotografie bij het tijdschrift Vogue. Hij wordt geprezen om zijn beheersing van monochrome achtergronden, precieze compositie en technische innovatie, met name in platinaafdruk. Zijn werk verkende vaak de kruising tussen high fashion en artistieke expressie, waarbij hij iconische figuren en ontwerpers vastlegde terwijl hij een sobere, modernistische esthetiek behield.
