Roy DeCarava

Roy Rudolph DeCarava (1919–2009) was een pionierende Amerikaanse fotograaf die bekendstond om zijn baanbrekende zwart-wit fine-artfotografie, in het bijzonder zijn documentatie van het leven van Afro-Amerikanen en jazzmuzikanten in New York City. Geboren in Harlem, kwam DeCarava voort uit de Harlem Renaissance en studeerde schilderkunst, architectuur en beeldhouwkunst aan de Cooper Union. Hij pleitte voor een artistieke benadering van de fotografie die de subjectieve creatieve gevoeligheid boven sociale documentatie stelde. DeCarava was de eerste Afro-Amerikaan die een Guggenheim Fellowship ontving en werd in 2006 met de National Medal of Arts bekroond. Zijn werk, dat vaak de nuances van het dagelijks leven en de iconische figuren van de jazzscène vastlegde, bevindt zich in talrijke permanente collecties, waaronder het Museum of Modern Art en het Metropolitan Museum of Art.
