Sally Mann is een vooraanstaande Amerikaanse fotograaf die bekend staat om haar zwart-witfotografie in grootformaat van mensen en plekken uit haar directe omgeving. Geboren in Lexington, Virginia, begon ze op zestienjarige leeftijd met fotograferen en behaalde uiteindelijk internationale roem voor haar intieme en vaak controversiële serie 'Immediate Family' (1992), waarin zij haar drie kinderen vastlegde in hun landelijke woning in Virginia. Haar werk verkent thema's als familie, verlies, de autonomie van het kind en het Amerikaanse landschap. Mann heeft talloze prestigieuze prijzen ontvangen, waaronder Guggenheim Fellowships en een Lifetime Achievement Award van de Royal Photographic Society. Ze is ook auteur en heeft verschillende fotoboeken gepubliceerd, evenals memoires en essays.[1,2]
