Sanne Sannes
fotograaf

Sanne Sannes: A Photobook Practice Cut Short
A sourced biography of Sanne Sannes, focused on his experimental practice and the 1964 photobook Oog om oog.
The catalogue photographer is securely identified by the RKDartists authority record, which gives Sanne Sannes as a Dutch photographer, artist, and filmmaker, born in Groningen on 19 March 1937 and killed in Bergen, North Holland, on 23 March 1967. The independent University of Leiden Depth of Field biography supplies the same dates and a detailed chronology. The Rijksmuseum collection record further documents Sannes as maker or named maker of works dated between 1960 and 1967.
Sannes studied painting and graphics at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, with photography as a secondary discipline under Huug Smit, according to Depth of Field. He left the academy in 1959 and continued experimentation in a military darkroom. The RKD record independently records Minerva as his education, his early departure in 1959, and a working period approximately 1952–1967. This is an unusually compressed career, but not a slight one: Depth of Field describes his work as challenging the rules and norms that governed photography at the time.
Institutional recognition came early. The University of Leiden chronology records Sannes’s inclusion in Photography ’63 at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, and his Dutch and European Prix Nièpce awards in 1964. The RKD authority record separately lists the Dutch Prix Nièpce in 1964. The Rijksmuseum page makes the material breadth of his practice tangible through collection entries for nude studies, portraits, landscapes, and pages from Diary of an Erotomaniac.
The catalogue connection: Oog om oog
The linked catalogue book, Oog om oog (1964), is the key contemporary publication in Sannes’s career. The University of Leiden chronology states that Sannes announced two photobooks in 1962; only the project with text by Hugo Claus was realised as Oog om oog. It further records that De Bezige Bij released it in December 1964, combining Sannes’s photographs with poems by Claus, and that photographs made in Sweden and Denmark figured in the book.
That edition-level context matters. Rather than treating Oog om oog as a generic retrospective label, it can be understood as the realised result of a prior book plan, and as a collaboration between photographs and poems. The catalogue’s first-edition entry locates the specific copy; Leiden’s research confirms the publisher, year, co-authorial relationship, and publication circumstances. It is therefore the most direct place to encounter Sannes’s photography in a publication made during his lifetime.
Depth of Field records that Sannes died after a road accident on 23 March 1967 while returning from a magazine assignment in Bergen. His surviving photographic and film projects consequently acquire their importance not through a romanticised early death, but through the demonstrable intensity of the work completed, exhibited, and collected in the years before it.
