William Herbert Mortensen (1897–1965) was een prominente Amerikaanse glamourfotograaf en Pictorialist, bekend om zijn Hollywood-portretten tijdens de jaren 1920 tot 1940. Geboren in Park City, Utah, als zoon van Deense immigranten, studeerde hij illustratie aan de Art Students League in New York voordat hij naar Hollywood verhuisde. Het werk van Mortensen kenmerkt zich door een romantische, schilderkunstige benadering waarbij technieken zoals bromoil-processen en handmatige manipulatie van negatieven met verf en puimsteen werden gebruikt. Hij werd vaak bekritiseerd door voorstanders van 'straight photography', zoals Ansel Adams, vanwege zijn theatrale opstellingen en fantasierijke onderwerpen, waaronder thema's als hekserij, demonen en historische figuren. Ondanks deze controverse blijft hij een belangrijke figuur in de fotografie van de 20e eeuw, met name vanwege zijn technische meesterschap en zijn rol als docent die zijn methoden onderwees aan de William Mortensen School of Photography in Laguna Beach.[1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11]
