The animals

The Animals is the first photobook by American street photographer Garry Winogrand. It consists of 43 black-and-white images captured at the Central Park Zoo and the Coney Island Aquarium over a period of seven years spanning from 1962 to 1969. The collection was first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in 1969, marking a pivotal moment in Winogrand's career. The work is recognized for its unique perspective on human and animal behavior, exploring the constructed nature of public and social spaces. The book includes an afterword by John Szarkowski, a prominent curator at the Museum of Modern Art.
