Gypsies

Published in 1975 as a collaboration between Robert Delpire, Aperture, and Josef Koudelka, 'Gypsies' (originally published in French as 'Gitans, la fin du voyage') is a milestone publication in the history of photography. The book documents the nomadic lives of Roma people in Eastern Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, France, and Spain between 1962 and 1971. It features black and white photography capturing the pathos and independence of these nomadic communities. Koudelka, who left Czechoslovakia in 1970 for political asylum and later joined Magnum Photos, produced these images during his travels through Europe, capturing a foundational body of work on the Roma people.
