This monograph showcases fifty-nine select images by American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989). The work focuses on a series of black-and-white Polaroid photographs produced during the early 1970s, which constitute an in-depth self-portrait. These images intently and graphically explore expressions, moods, postures, and actions ranging from angelic and innocent to sinister and erotic. Comprised of Mapplethorpe's earliest photographs, the book presents the artist's most revealing attempts to wed the erotic and sexual with other theoretical concerns. It includes an opening essay by Richard D. Marshall.
