William Klein

William Klein was een invloedrijke Amerikaans-geboren Franse fotograaf en filmmaker, bekend om zijn ironische benadering van media en innovatief gebruik van fotografische technieken. Geboren in New York City als zoon van Hongaars-Joodse immigranten, studeerde hij sociologie aan het City College of New York voordat hij tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog diende bij het U.S. Army. Na zijn verhuizing naar Frankrijk volgde hij aanvankelijk een opleiding tot schilder onder Fernand Léger, voordat hij overstapte naar de fotografie. Klein behaalde brede bekendheid door zijn modefotografie voor Vogue en zijn foto-essays over diverse steden, waaronder New York, Rome, Moskou en Tokio. Zijn werk wordt gekenmerkt door een onverzoenlijke afwijzing van traditionele technische normen, waarbij hij vaak groothoeklenzen, natuurlijk licht en bewegingsonscherpte gebruikte om de stedelijke vitaliteit vast te leggen.
