Miwa Yanagi focuses on the relationship between young girls and older women. As a point of departure, she starts with the often gruesome, violent and cruel European versions of tales by the Brothers Grimm. Etched into our collective memories, the photographer's images examine and twist the mythologies further using masks, wigs, mixed race models and female children dressed as older women.
Hardback with embossed lettering and tipped-in photo, full-page b&w and color photographic reproductions throughout. Text in Japanese and English.
publishers info: She was clearly inspired by "Red Riding Hood," "Snow White" and other tales from Grimm Brothers and Andersen. Taken from Yanagi Miwa's popular series "Fairly Tale." Her black and white photos of an old lady and a girl with special make-up, are nothing but the perfect fusion of gross and aesthetic elements. In a closed space, the girl transports through time, often as a strange manifestation of 'old' and 'young.' Another bemused yet hidden side of fairly tales are told here.
